Garden clubs

•The Prospect Heights Garden Club has its first meeting of the year at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gary Morava Center at Center, 110 W. Camp McDonald Road, Prospect Heights. Call (847) 259-5354 for more information.

•The Garden Club of Lake Zurich hosts a meeting on gardening in the shade is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Foglia YMCA, 1025 Old McHenry Road, Lake Zurich. It also hosts a plant sale featuring mums and other locally grown perennials from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the ELA Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail in Lake Zurich. Demonstrations

•Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery hosts a "Hosta Happening" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 11618 McConnell Road, Woodstock. There's a presentation on hosta leaf identification at 10 a.m., a presentation on conifers for shade gardens is at 1 p.m. and an auction at 3 p.m. Call (815) 338-7442.

Chicago Botanic Garden

The Illinois Mycological Association Show and Sale showcases more than 50 varieties of mushrooms in Illinois from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Free flower arranging workshops are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday. Call (847) 835-8392 to register.

The Daily Herald's Giving Garden Day features demonstrations on planting extra vegetables to give to the needy and a garden "walk and talk" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept 9 at the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden.

The garden is at 1000 Lake-Cook Road, just east of the Edens Expressway in Glencoe. Hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Admission is free. Special event fees apply. Parking is $15, $7 on Tuesdays for seniors 62 and older.

Morton Arboretum

The D.I.G. workshop from 1 to 2 p.m. today and Sept. 9 is on dividing spring blooming perennials.

The fourth annual Fall Color 5K Run is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Visit www.mortonarb.org or www.cararuns.org for more information.

The arboretum is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The entrance is on Route 53 just west of I-355 and north of the Reagan Tollway.
