Boyd continues her early charge for St. Charles E.

For the second consecutive match, St. Charles East senior Mattie Boyd led the Saints' volleyball team in kills.

Boyd posted 10 kills in a season-opening win against Wheaton North and 11 more in a 25-14, 25-14 nonconference win against Lockport Wednesday in St. Charles.

Boyd, a DePaul-bound outside hitter, was the only starting senior on the floor for the Saints (2-0).

"Because we are young, we are still trying to learn some new things, so she's had to (lead) the last couple games," St. Charles East coach Jennie Kull said of Boyd. "It will start spreading out as soon as we start getting more organized. But we depend on her. She's really good at placing the ball. She does a phenomenal job. We know we need to get more people involved, and that's going to happen eventually."

"Once (the younger players) get warmed up, they'll be great," Boyd said. "I was the only senior out there (at times). We are a very young team."

Both games played out similar for the Saints. They never trailed in either one, and just as Lockport seemed to want to make a comeback, St. Charles East always had an answer.

"That is a great way to start," Kull said. "(Tuesday against Wheaton North), we lost the lead and came back, so that tells me that mentally, this team is mature on the court."

The closest Lockport came to catching the Saints in Game 1 was 14-11. After a St. Charles East timeout, it scored the next 4 points behind the serving of Julia Marks, Porters errors and a kill from Boyd.

The Saints held their lead comfortably and capped Game 1 with back-to-back kills from starting sophomore Jacqui Seidel.

After a 5-5 knot in Game 2, the Saints went on to score 9 of the next 10 points, building their lead to 14-6. Toward the end of the game, they were able to tally 6 consecutive points behind Marks' serving and kills from Boyd once again, along with Lockport errors.

The match concluded with a Lockport hitting error.

Laura Homann finished with 18 assists, Seidel had 5 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs and Caroline Niski posted 3 blocks for the Saints.

Kull is happy with the way the season is going so far.

"It's the same thing we did (against Wheaton North)," Kull said. "The nice thing we have right now is ball control and serving. Those are two big positives for us right now."
