Stockbridge community fully stocked

Stockbridge, located on the far west side of Elk Grove Village, is full of spacious single-family homes set among parks and schools.

Roseanne and Vincent Salemi liked Stockbridge so much that they have owned two houses there, having moved initially to the subdivision in 1990.

"We wanted to have a backyard pool and our daughters didn't want to move away from their friends," said Roseanne Salemi of the family's decision to buy a second house in Stockbridge in 1998. "So we bought another house a few blocks away and completely gutted it."

Dennis Toomey, of RE/MAX Territory in Elk Grove Village, acknowledged that the area's schools are a strong asset.

"Stockbridge is great for families with kids as they can walk to Mead Junior High School located in the middle of the subdivision," Toomey said.

Homes in Stockbridge are all two-story structures with basements and two-car attached garages built by Centex Homes in the mid-1980s.

Popular models range from 2,169 to 2,531 square feet and have three or four bedrooms and 2½ baths. Sale prices range from $450,000 to $650,000.

Residences have features such as vaulted, coffered or cathedral ceilings, along with mature landscaping.

Some owners have built additions onto their homes to expand the size of bedrooms or to add garage space. Many basements also are finished.

Toomey noted that move-up buyers are primarily attracted to Stockbridge because of the homes' size and the "community feel" of the neighborhood.

Salemi agreed.

"This is really a nice area," she said. "People care and they maintain their properties well."

A number of parks maintained by the Elk Grove Park District are within the subdivision and provide a range of recreational opportunities.

These include tennis and basketball facilities at Mead Park, and a nine-hole Frisbee course, softball field and playground at Clark Park.

"Kids love Fountain Square Park with its water play equipment," Toomey said.

Shopping is within walking distance as two strip shopping centers are at the intersection of Biesterfield and Meacham roads.

Another strip center is a few minutes south at Nerge and Meacham roads, while the Woodfield Shopping Center is a short drive north.

Expressways are nearby at Biesterfield Road and Route 53

Public transportation is about three miles south with Metra Rail stations on the Milwaukee District West Line, in Roselle and Medinah.

Salemi gives the community a ringing endorsement.

"It's a very safe neighborhood, too," she said. "We really don't have any problems here at all."
