Briefs: U-46 settles with 2 workers

Two employees threatened in June with termination by Elgin Area School District U-46 allegedly over instant messages they sent at work had the status of their jobs finalized Monday night. The school board approved settlements with Derek Baxter, who resigned, and with Lori Berke, who kept her computer department post. Terms of the settlements were not disclosed. The two, along with a colleague, had said they might have been targeted because of their expertise with an e-mail system at the center of a dispute in the district's long-running federal bias lawsuit. While the district denies that claim, the director of the department abruptly announced his resignation a week after the three employees went public with their claims, and Baxter was deposed by the plaintiffs in the bias lawsuit. The job status of the third employee, Jennifer Lugar, was unknown Tuesday.
