Fox River Grove cyclist dies of injuries

A 58-year-old Fox River Grove man was killed Monday when his motorcycle was struck from behind at the corner of routes 12 and 134 in Fox Lake.

Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz said Bruce E. Ankele of Fox River Grove was slowing for a red light at the busy intersection when he was struck from behind by a white Ford Escort at 3:39 p.m.

Gliniewicz said the Escort, driven by 66-year-old Mary Lewis of Barrington, was driving at a high rate of speed and did not slow until striking the motorcycle.

Gliniewicz said Ankele was treated at the scene for numerous trauma injuries before being flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

He died at 5:22 a.m. Tuesday.

Attempts to reach family members of Ankele were unsuccessful Tuesday.

Lewis was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry with an elbow injury, and passed tests for alcohol and drug use.

Gliniewicz said Lewis was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He added further charges could be added as the investigation continues.

Route 12 was shut down for two hours Monday while investigators cleared the scene.
