Two DuPage County banks robbed
Police officers and federal agents scrambled through DuPage County Friday to gather evidence in the wake of two bank robberies.
Oakbrook Terrace police said a bank robbery occurred in town sometime before 5 p.m. Friday. Officers on duty couldn't provide further information.
They'll compare notes with Wheaton police during the next couple days to determine if Oakbrook Terrace's robbery is related to one that occurred in Wheaton.
Wheaton police were alerted to the 5 p.m. robbery of the Fifth Third Bank at 1768 S. Blanchard Street.
Deputy Police Chief Tom Meloni said a man wearing a blue hat and gray T-shirt told bank personnel that he had a gun, but didn't show it.
Once the man collected an unknown amount of cash, he fled northbound on foot.
Meloni said police will review film of the robbery, but early indications are that the still-at-large Wheaton Bandit isn't the culprit. The Wheaton Bandit is suspected in robbing more than a dozen banks in the area over the past five years.
The FBI will assist the investigations of both bank robberies, but no agents were able to comment late Friday afternoon.
The agency has had its hands full the past couple years with record-breaking numbers of bank robberies set in both 2005 and 2006. There were 284 bank robberies in the five-county Chicago metropolitan area last year.
