Nothing like reading before criticizing

Well, congratulations Nancy Brown!

For what?

For taking her head out of the sand and opening her mind (July 17 Harry Potter story).

This type of attitude, where a person condemns a book without even investigating its contents is the sort of blind faith I have come to expect from the religious right.

She says she didn't read the books because "people said they were trying to suck you into the occult."

This from a woman who was a reviewer of books for a Catholic home schooling magazine.

She had plenty of time to decide to ban the books in her home and dissuade her readers from pursuing them, but not the time to actually read them before condemning them.

These books are fiction, much like Brown's previous knowledge of them.

Defy racist labels, defend your nation

The protest in Waukegan on July 16 by supporters of illegal immigrants once again illustrates the looming immigration disaster for America.

Taking to our streets are mobs of people who do not belong in the United States, yet are demanding that we accommodate them by disregarding the rule of law that made our nation the greatest civilization in the history of mankind.

This time they are insisting that we not press for the deportation of illegal immigrants who have been convicted of violent crimes.

It's insanity! Are we to abandon the system of governance that brought our country to its now endangered height of glory?

How much longer will we tolerate being called racists while conniving civil rights attorneys manipulate our legal system and degrade our society by implanting millions of the Third World's uneducated and impoverished into our neighborhoods?

Franks not afraid to stand up to nonsense

State Rep. Jack Franks did a great job when he told Gov. Rod Blagojevich that the House is ready to work even if the governor won't show up to the meetings he called.

Jack's committee actually got some things done for the people of Illinois.

Jack told the legislators that they can only make a budget if they begin taking ideas off the table.

The committee did just that when they voted down the leasing of the lottery.

Unlike Blagojevich, Franks is looking for long-term solutions for Illinois' budget problems.

For health, reject gravel expansion

I turn to you for assistance in helping to protect my health, my wife's health, my 2-year-old daughter's health, and the health of our baby, due in December.

I have asthma.

I can tell you that the current Meyer gravel pit behind the Fox Trails subdivision is most likely making my situation worse. I can only imagine what it's doing to the rest of my family.

All one need do is pick up a bag of concrete and read the warnings on the back about silica and the links to lung damage.

What do you think is blowing around in the air due to the current Meyer Gravel pit behind Fox Trails?

Help prevent Cary from changing the law to allow Meyer to expand its gravel pit operations.
