Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church: Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church will hold Game Plan Sports Camp Monday to Friday.

Your child will receive quality sports instruction from positive Christian role models each day along with a Bible lesson that will strengthen their character in and out of the game. Every camper will receive a T-shirt, camp literature and daily take-home Bible studies.

This camps is for children entering third through eighth grades. The fee is $25 per child.

Community Protestant Church: Community Protestant Church, United Church of Christ, will have its vacation Bible School from Aug. 6 to 10. Children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade are welcome to attend the evening sessions of VBS.

The Galilee By-the-Sea theme this year will take participants back to the time of Jesus in the Holy Land. Each evening will begin and end with singing, dancing and celebrating. It will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a child-friendly dinner provided.

•Community Protestant Church, United Church of Christ, is holding an Adult Education program Tuesday. It will feature a multimedia presentation on the United Church of Christ's 26th General Synod held recently in Connecticut. Speakers in the presentation include Bill Moyers and Barack Obama, who is a member of Trinity UCC in Chicago. Congregation Beth Judea: At 8:30 a.m. Sundays, the Talmud Study Group, under the leadership of Beth Judea congregant Orin Rotman, continues its study of the Talmud section titled "Rosh Hashana." The topics covered in this section include an amazing look into the development and nature of the Jewish calendar and culture; discussion on how we and the world are judged by God; and the depths of the Rosh Hashana prayers and customs.

The study group will be using a copy of the Artscroll Schottenstein Talmud edition with English translations and commentary, along with a host of text and online Web sources.

Join the group once or every week. No R.S.V.P. is required. No previous experience is necessary, only the desire to honor Torah by studying it. All are invited for study and lively discussion.

•The Social Action Committee of Congregation Beth Judea will be collecting school supplies for Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS) during the month of August. Packing for the collection will take place at the synagogue from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 Drop-offs can be made in the synagogue office starting Monday.

The following donations are requested: backpacks, packages of pencils, pens, pocket folders, spiral notebooks, packages of crayons, washable markers, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, boxes of Kleenex, protractors and compasses, calculators, assignment books, book covers, sketch pads, colored pencils, three-ring binders, highlighters, and packages of wide-ruled notebook paper.

Crossroads Church: Come and enjoy the afternoon with your neighbors and friends at the annual picnic The picnic is free and all are welcome.

The picnic will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11.

Activities include a moon walk, water balloon toss, hayride, face painting and tattoos, men's basketball, washer toss, and more. Food includes hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the fixings will be served at noon.

Evangelical Free Church of Wauconda: Pastor Christopher Barnes has completed 26 years of ministry at the Evangelical Free Church of Wauconda.

He and his wife, Linda, will begin a new ministry at St. Luke's Evangelical Church in Wellington, Mo., Sept. 9.

Barnes began his ministry at EFCW in 1981 as assistant pastor with an emphasis in youth ministries. Over the years his responsibilities and titles have changed. In addition to working with youths, he helped start Barnabas Players, a drama troupe that has performed more than 18 productions in Wauconda, the Chicago suburbs, Wisconsin and India. Another ministry that Christopher began was the summer day camp program called Camp Agapé. Now in its 22nd year, this summer program provides quality, dependable child care for our community.

When the students he was working with got married and had children, he accepted the position of adult ministries pastor so he could continue to mentor them. Later his responsibilities were changed to pastor of leadership and equipping. In this role he assumed most of the responsibility for preaching and giving direction to the church. He was also a sought-after counselor.

Linda Barnes taught the 2- and 3-year-old Sunday school class for countless years. She was deeply loved and appreciated in this role by the children as well as their parents.

She also served for 20 years as manager of Tri-County Thrift Shop located in Wauconda. The shop helps fund the work of Tri-County Parenting & Pregnancy Services with offices in Grayslake and Crystal Lake.

Fox Lake Baptist Church: The church at 27430 W. Nippersink Road, Ingleside, offers a contemporary worship service with a relevant message from the Bible at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Nursery is available as well as a Bible-based program for children ages kindergarten through sixth grade during the morning worship service.

On Sunday, Pastor Chuck Vitel will preach a message in his series on the Parables of Jesus titled, "Lessons learned from a dinner party," based on Luke 14.

High school youth [H2O] generally meet on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. Junior high students [CLAY] meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

A men's group meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. There are various ministries for women throughout the year.

First Church of Christ, Scientist: The church is at 240 Park Place in Libertyville, which is across from National City Bank. Sunday services will be held at 10 a.m. The subject this week is "Truth." Sunday School is held at the same hour for children and young people up to the age of 20.

Also, there is Wednesday midweek meetings at 7:30 p.m. Here attendants give gratitude for the help and blessings that their growing understanding of God has brought into their lives. All are welcome to attend services.

Grace Lutheran Church: Grace Lutheran Church will have its semiannual book and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 17, when everything will be half price. The bag sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 featuring $5 a bag.

Grace Lutheran Church is at 501 Valley Park Drive, Libertyville.

Both nonfiction and fiction books on a variety of subjects will be available as well as many contemporary and classic children's books, cookbooks and gardening books.

Immanuel Church: Immanuel Church, 2300 Dilleys Road in Gurnee, offers three identical worship services at 8:30 and 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Kids' World provides a safe and fun environment for children from birth through fifth grade during all services. Midweek evening ministries include J.A.M. (sixth- through eighth-grade students) and IMPACT (high school) on Wednesdays. Small groups for men meet on Tuesday mornings and women's Bible studies are available on Wednesday mornings. Northwest Christian Community Church: Northwest Christian Community Church and its Hebrew Roots ministry, Heritage Fellowship, invite the public to join its weekly Bible study and Hebrew Roots class.

The class will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting Wednesday at the church, 28566 N. Lemon Road, Mundelein. A complete schedule can be found on the church Web site at www.nwcc.cc/heritage.html.

Topics will include Walking in the Dust of Jesus, What Did the Jewish holidays mean to Jesus, Jesus and the Jewish Sects and the Temple and the Disciples.

Through the B'sorat HaMaschiach or Good News of Messiah Bible study, participants will learn how to unravel Jesus' teachings and parables. They will make the connection between the Old Testament and New Covenant by viewing the Torah life practiced by Jesus and other people read about in the Gospels. And understand the relationship between Gospel and Jewish thought through commentary and explanations from Jewish literature that reveals the Hebraic nature of the Gospels.

Heritage Fellowship also will offer services for biblical festivals and Holy Days including Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Festival of Dedication (Hanukkah), Purim, Passover and Shavuot.

Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist: Join Helen Bond of Medusa Drums and the Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation for worship services at 9:15 a.m. Sunday at Byron Colby Barn, 1561 Jones Point Road, Grayslake, in the Prairie Crossing community. Bond will present a spiritual drumming service and tell of her work in Africa with "Benkadi," a charitable project involving education, schools, and living needs for native people in Guinea, West Africa.

Prairie Circle UUC meets each Sunday in the Byron Colby Barn. Children's religious education for preschool through high school runs concurrent to the adult service. St. Matthew Lutheran Church: The church is at 24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods. Women's Spiritual Growth Group presents "Loved By God," a Scripture-based Bible study by Liz Curtis Higgs.

This eight-week, thought-provoking video, workbook and discussion series is designed to draw members into the Word of God and experience his blessings by studying the lives of Jacob, Esau, Leah and Rachel.

Classes are open to all women from St. Matthew and the community and will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Krueger Hall Sept. 5 to Oct. 4. Fee is $25 for workbook and materials, payable on the first night of the class. Child care will be provided. Antioch United Methodist Church: Vacation Bible school is scheduled for Monday to Friday (9 a.m.-noon) at the Antioch United Methodist Church, 848 Main St.

Children, age 3 through fifth grade, will experience the beauty and wonder of hot air ballooning while exploring a deeper relation with God through story, music, crafts and fun. Each morning begins with "Lift Off Rally," an assembly time featuring Skylar the Sky Squirrel and Scoop, a reporter from the Hot Air Ballyhoo, setting the stage for the day's high-flying Bible experience.

Prayer for peace: At 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15, a prayer service for peace in the Middle East will be at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 Main St., Barrington.
