Fatal crash probe ongoing:

The investigation into a fatal collision in Schaumburg near Woodfield Shopping Center Wednesday is expected to take at least a week before any potential charges are filed. Authorities said there is no suspicion so far that alcohol was a factor in the crash that killed Dennis G. Pearce, 37 , of Elwood. He died when the 2004 Jeep Wrangler he was driving was struck by a 1994 Mercury Sable driven by 19-year-old Israel Valadez of Plainfield. Preliminary indications were that the Jeep, which rolled over in the crash, was traveling south on West Frontage Road and was struck on its passenger side by the Mercury as the Jeep entered the intersection of Higgins Road at 2:33 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Several routes were closed for hours while authorities worked the crash scene.
