Jacobs strolls past Glenbard North in tourney

Jacobs walked into North Central College with high expectations.

The Golden Eagles walked out with a 9-3 win over Glenbard North on the first day of pool play at the IHSBCA summer state baseball tournament Monday in Naperville.

In between, they did a lot of walking.

Ten walks -- including four in a 4-run first inning -- helped Jacobs (14-8) break out to a big lead against the Panthers (22-15), who trailed 9-0 before scoring 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning.

It was a great start to the tournament for Jacobs, which is averaging nearly 13 runs a game in the postseason. Unlike past games, however, the Golden Eagles needed only 6 hits to get their run support for starting pitcher Mike Castillo.

In 6 shutout innings Castillo struck out four, walked two and scattered 4 hits to earn the win.

"Getting those 4 runs in the first inning definitely took off a lot of pressure," Castillo said. "The offense has been doing that a lot lately. I just put it in cruise control and tried to get through every inning."

After Castillo escaped a mild jam in the top of the first, Jacobs showed patience at the plate with three straight walks to begin the bottom of the first. Matt Igara's RBI single kept the bases loaded, and another walk to Castillo made it 2-0. An error on a fielder's choice led to the final 2 runs.

"Fortunately we get another chance (today)," said Panthers coach Mike Franzen, whose team plays Oak Forest at 1:30 p.m. today at North Central. "It's a learning experience. It's a game, and it's behind us. We've still got a shot at this if we do what we're supposed to do."

Jacobs added 2 runs in the third inning, one on an error and the second on Jake Vojtsek's RBI single. The lead grew to 9-0 in the sixth inning when Adam Camacho drew a bases-loaded walk and Shawn Hickey followed with a 2-run single.

Glenbard North staged its seventh-inning rally with two outs. Alex Mullendore singled home the first run. Justin Wahrman added a 2-run single before the Golden Eagles finally secured the win.

"I have a lot of confidence in them right now," said Jacobs coach Jim Blaseck, whose team plays Highland Park at 11 a.m. today at North Central. "They're doing a nice job -- pitching, hitting and fielding."

Hinsdale South 3, Lake Zurich 2:Ã…’The Hornets (20-8) broke out to a 3-0 lead and held on for the victory in the opening day of pool play at the IHSBCA summer state baseball tournament Monday at Naperville's North Central College.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, Lake Zurich (26-9) loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Brock Simon, Reid Bergstrom and Steve Cleary. A double play pulled the Bears within 3-2, but another groundout sealed the complete-game win for Hinsdale South's Joe Begel.

The Hornets scored twice in the bottom of the third inning on four Lake Zurich errors. Danny Miller's RBI double in the fourth scored John Balzano.

Bergstrom put the Bears on the board in the fifth with a solo home run.

The Hornets look to go 2-0 when they take on Sandburg at 10 a.m. today at Benedictine University. Lake Zurich follows with a 12:30 game against Fenwick.
