Baseball

Flyers Orange champs: The Schaumburg Flyers Orange 11U baseball team won the MSBL B League tournament championship. In the opening game, the Flyers came from behind to beat the Hoffman Heat 10-6. In the semifinal, the Flyers were down 5-0 and came back, scoring 8 runs in the last three innings to win 9-6 over the Suburban Nationals.

In the championship game against Waycinden, the Flyers fell behind 10-3 after four innings only to come from behind again. They scored the tying runs with 2 outs in the seventh inning to force extra innings. In the eighth inning, the Flyers scored 5 runs to win the championship game 15-11.

The team includes: Jacob, Dietrich, Zac Filippo, Joe Franz, David Hedman, Jack Holden, Kyle Hrycko, Chad Kowalewski, Joe Renda, Brad Schwind, Nick Starkey, Tyler Watson and Blake Wittkamp. The team is coached by Steve Hrycko, Don Schwind, Rob Starkey, John Hedman and Dan Dietrich.

Skills camps: The Schaumburg Flyers will host instructional skills camps at Alexian Field this summer for youngsters ages 8 to 15. Schaumburg Flyers coaches and players will pass on their professional training to the ballplayers at the clinics. Each camp is held from 10 a.m. to noon for two days. The Flyers' hitting camp is Tuesday and Wednesday and the fielding camp is Aug. 14 and 15. The cost per camp is $50 per child.

Travel tryouts:Å’The Hoffman Estates Heat 11-year-old competitive Travel Baseball Team tryouts will be held at Cannon Crossings, 1600 Nicholson Drive, Hoffman Estates on the following dates and times.

•Aug. 18 -- 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

•Aug. 19 -- 10 a.m. to noon

•Aug. 25 --10 a.m. to noon

Players for the 2008 baseball season cannot turn 12 before May 1, 2008. Hoffman Estates residency is not necessary. Tryout participants only need to be available for a minimum of one of these dates and times.

The Hoffman Heat participates in the Mid Suburban Baseball League, a highly competitive league that plays in the surrounding towns. For more information, call Mike Harris at (847) 209-0792.

Boys travel tryouts: Palatine Baseball Association will hold tryouts for the 2008 Palatine Travelers 13-and-under and 14-and-under full-time travel teams Aug. 18 and 19 at Hamilton Fields D and E, 1101 N. Smith St., Palatine. There will be one 14-and-under team and one 13-and-under team. for the 2008 season. An additional 13-year-old team will be added if the talent and tryout participation warrants a second team. Times of tryouts on both days are:

•14 and under -- 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

•13 and under -- 1 to 4 p.m.

For the 14 and under team, boys must be born on or after May 1, 1993; and 13 and under, born on or after May 1, 1994.

High school baseball players are ineligible. Players should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start times. Attendance on both dates is recommended; however, only one day is mandatory. Players who are not current Palatine Travelers must present a copy of their birth certificate at the tryout.

Baseball, softball

Travel tryouts: Palatine Youth Baseball and Softball will hold tryouts for the girls Stingers U12 full-time travel team at the following times.

•Aug. 25 -- 9:30 a.m. registration and 10 a.m. to noon, fielding and base running at Juniper Field, 1000 W. Palatine Road, Hoffman Estates.

Aug. 26 -- 9 to 11 a.m. pitching and hitting, National Baseball/Softball Academy, Wheeling.

Girls trying out for the U12 team must be 12 or under as of Jan. 1, 2008. Eligibility is determined by birth date, not grade. Girls need to attend both days of tryouts.

Pre-registration is required, and forms may be downloaded at www.pyb.com, click on Girls Travel information. There is a $10 fee for all participants, payable to Palatine Youth Baseball. Anyone who did not play in PYB during 2007 (house or travel program), must also include a copy of birth certificate as well.

Bowling

August tourney: Special Olympics Illinois Area 18 will host its Area Bowling Tournament from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Elk Grove Bowl in Elk Grove Village. Area 18 athletes will compete in singles, doubles or developmental competitions. Athletes will use their scores to qualify for the sectional bowling tournament in Addison. Golf

S&H Scramble: Schaumburg Park District S&H Senior Golf League's Scramble will be held July 31 on the Players course at Schaumburg Golf Course. All pairings will be made up from handicap scores of the players. The pairing committee will make up the four-person teams, and preprinted score cards will be used. Points from the event will be awarded to the entire team, and all points go toward the awards banquet on Oct. 16.
