Take charge of your diabetes workshops offered at McHenry County

Submitted by McHenry County Department of Health

If you are at risk, diagnosed with, or caring for someone with diabetes, the McHenry County Department of Health is offering several no-cost, six-week classes focusing on improving physical activity, self-care, nutrition and individual action steps.

According to Carol Waggoner, a registered nurse and educator for McHenry County Department of Health, "Diabetes is a chronic progressive disease which requires knowledge and support to manage. We are offering these free classes in a variety of community settings so that they are accessible to all."

The curriculum was developed by Stanford University to increase the confidence of participants to manage or prevent diabetes. The class includes a variety of interactive activities such as brainstorming and problem solving.

Quotes from current class members offer glowing praise.

"This has been a positive learning experience - time well spent!" "It gave me guidelines to help manage my blood sugar." "I have been looking for this for some time now and have found it very helpful." and finally, "This class has been a valuable tool in managing my health. The instructors are caring and knowledgeable and have been inspirational in fostering positive thinking and a healthier lifestyle."

Registration is under way for several classes.

A class will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at St. John the Baptist Catholic School, 2304 W Church Street in Johnsburg.

The classes are open for registration at www.mcdh.info or by calling Carol Waggoner, registered nurse, at (815) 334-4580.
