The Wheaton Municipal Band Captures the American Spirit

In the 9th concert of the 2017 season, The Wheaton Municipal Band celebrates the American Spirit with music by the great American Composers. On Thursday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Band Shell in downtown Wheaton, the band tackles some of the most beloved music for concert band. Even though the band only has one rehearsal, Dr. Bruce Moss, music director, is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and "make it work." "This is one of the finest bands of its type," says Moss. That is one of the reasons this band will be performing at the prestigious International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic at McCormick Place in Chicago in December.

On the program this week is music from the beloved American Composer Aaron Copland. His music evokes the pioneer spirit with its lush harmonies and playful energy. Also on the program, is music from George Gershwin. Gershwin did not write for concert band, but his music easily transcribes for the full sound of a 90-piece wind band. Gershwin's driving rhythms and complex jazz harmonies makes it powerful and fun to listen to. One of America's greatest composers was Leonard Bernstein. The music is difficult, but worth every bit of effort. The band counts like crazy to keep up. In addition, audience loves John Williams. No American Composer concert would be complete without the recognizable movie music of John Williams.

On the program is bass trombone soloist Robert Holland. He plays the Waltz Caprice by Pryor. Holland will be arranging the accompaniment for the band.

Don't miss this wonderful concert. It is sure to have something for everyone.

Thursday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Band Shell in downtown Wheaton. Bring a lawn chair and a picnic and enjoy the beautiful music.
