McHenry County College celebrates 50 years of changing lives
McHenry County College celebrates its 50th anniversary and continued service to the community with several events throughout the year to highlight the institution's rich history and solid commitment to students and community members over the past half-century.
Plans call for events to bring together the thousands alumni, retirees and community members who have launched their education and enhanced their careers at McHenry County College.
The celebration kicks off with a Golden Homecoming from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, for MCC students, alumni, current and former employees, retirees, current and former board members.
These guests will have an opportunity to reminisce with new friends and those from years past and immerse in MCC's walking timeline and preview the MCC's 50th anniversary documentary. In addition, guests will learn about the next 50 years in McHenry County, including MCC's latest initiative, the Liebman Science Center - scheduled to open in 2018 and meet the newest Scot, Roary.
"After 50 years, we want to reflect on and celebrate our rich history and also envision the progress we hope to make in higher education for the next 50 years," said Christina Haggerty, interim vice president of institutional advancement. "We are committed to developing successful citizens who contribute to the future success of the community."
Following the Homecoming, the College will host the MCC Scots Fest, an interactive arts festival and car show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 10, in appreciation to the community for supporting the college's half-century of progress.
The arts festival, which is free and open to the public, will feature MCC music ensembles, Strikers Drum Line, Pots & Pans, storyteller Jim May, a kids activities area and interactive art demonstrations from MCC faculty and students.
Another highlight is a community car show will be featured on campus. Food and beverages will be for sale from a variety of food trucks. The rolling radio from Star Radio 105.5 also will be featured. Community members are invited to stop by the college to view the historic timeline in the corridor between Buildings B and C, which will be on display throughout the year.
In addition, MCC will participate in the Crystal Lake Fourth of July Parade Sunday, July 2, and a Friends of MCC Foundation Gala is planned for Friday, Nov. 10. Plus, other events will include a Fall Opening Day celebration, multi-chamber mixer, MCC Night and the winter commencement.
