Trinity's Alcántara wins Book of the Year award from Preaching Magazine

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Assistant Professor of Homiletics Jared E. Alcántara won the 2017 Preaching Magazine Book of the Year award for his recently published volume about Rev. Dr. Gardner C. Taylor.

Cascade Books published What Gardner C. Taylor Can Teach Us about Preaching in October 2016. The award announcement in the magazine's spring issue calls Alcántara's work "a slim volume with a big impact," adding, "the book is packed with practical wisdom from Taylor's pen and pulpit that will enrich the lives and ministry of those who read."

Taylor was pastor of the Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. TIME Magazine once dubbed Taylor the "Dean of the nation's black preachers," and Baylor University included him on a list of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world. Taylor died on Easter Sunday, 2015 at the age of 96.

In an endorsement of the book, Pastor Bryan Carter of Concord Church in Dallas wrote that "Dr. Alcántara not only introduces us to how Taylor models vital preaching habits, but he also gives us tools for incorporating them in our sermons. The preaching community is truly enriched by this seminal work."

"This is a prophetic and timely book," wrote Pastor Bryan Loritts of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, Calif. "I'm making it required reading for every pastor I train."

Alcántara joined the TEDS faculty in 2014 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. His doctoral dissertation focused on Taylor's homiletical legacy.
