Trinity introduces new program of study in computer science

The undergraduate faculty of Trinity International University has approved a new program of study in computer science that will begin in the 2017 fall semester.

A survey from CareerBuilder.com and Emsi showed information technology ranks among the five fastest-growing job categories in 2017, with a 12 percent increase in available positions since 2012. They're also among the highest-paying jobs, with average salaries of up to $49 per hour.

Trinity College students majoring in programs such as mathematics or business will have the option of adding computer science as a second major in an effort to improve their marketability with potential employers.

"We are confident that computer science will help Trinity graduates achieve even more success in the job market," Trinity College Dean Thomas H. L. Cornman said. "A major in computer science can enhance almost any career choice, because graduates will demonstrate the ability to apply technological problem-solving in the workplace."

This marks the second technology-related addition to Trinity's undergraduate curriculum in the past two years. The new criminal justice major includes a digital studies emphasis that focuses on high-tech crimes, including cyber-based terrorism, espionage, computer intrusions, and cyber fraud.

Trinity College now has introduced four new programs of study since the start of the 2015-16 academic year. In addition to computer science and criminal justice, social and interactive media and pre-seminary biblical studies/Christian ministry were added for the current year.

Trinity students who major in computer science will be required to complete 40-43 semester hours in the curriculum, including classes in programming, networking, database management, computer ethics, and a professional internship.

Computer science will be taught within the department of mathematics and computer information systems, and students also will complete 12 additional semester hours in calculus and statistics.
