Anderson Animal Shelter joins Pet Supplies Plus Dog Days fest

Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin has teamed up with Pet Supplies Plus for a mega-adoption event and brew fest, featuring more than 40 adoptable cats and kittens as well as dogs and puppies of all breeds.

Dog Days Brew Fest will be 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Pet Supplies Plus Montgomery location, 1791 Douglas Road.

In addition to the mega-adoption event, the festival will feature a Dock Dogs competition, microbrewery beers, pet industry vendors, Saturday-night concerts and a 50/50 raffle benefiting Anderson Animal Shelter.

"We are excited to partner with Pet Supplies Plus and we're honored that they chose us as their recipient charity," said Beth Drake, executive director of Anderson Animal Shelter. "We have more than 200 animals who need forever homes either at the shelter or in our foster program, and adoption events like these help us ensure that we find their forever families quickly."

Adoptable pets will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Maria Schau, off-site adoption coordinator for Anderson, said, "This is a great opportunity to meet some wonderful pets. All sizes, breeds and ages will be available. There's no waiting period - you can take your new best friend home with you the day you adopt. With so many great animals to choose from, at least one is sure to steal your heart … but if you choose two, our "Better with a Buddy" program means you'll pay only half the adoption fee for the second pet!" said Schau.

"Our Dog Days Brew Fest is about bringing the community together and encouraging pet adoptions," said George Lennon, franchise owner of the Montgomery Pet Supplies Plus store. "We are so glad to be partnering with a top-notch shelter like Anderson. We hope to raise a lot of money for them and find many forever homes for well-deserving cats and dogs."

"Our adoptions are an amazing deal," said Dr. Sharon Colgan, Anderson staff veterinarian. "Adopting from Anderson means you've chosen a healthy, spayed or neutered pet who is up-to-date on their vaccinations and dewormings. Paying for these services at a private practice vet clinic would cost upward of $500. You can adopt a pet from Anderson for far less. Not only that, when you adopt from a shelter, you know you're saving a life, rather than supporting a puppy mill. That's a good feeling, and it's the ethical thing to do," she finished.
