Students to compete in Robotic VEX Challenge

The inaugural MCC Robotic VEX Challenge 2016 will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon Friday, March 18, in the multipurpose room at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

More than 120 students from nine local high schools will compete in the first Robotics Challenge sponsored by MCC.

The students built their robots at their respective schools and competed within the school for a place to come to the challenge.

The competition will test the students' robots to gather as many balls of two types - ping-pong and Wiffle balls - and place them into buckets placed in the competition pit. Each ball awards the team with points. Additionally, each team will be judged on their robot design and functionality.

MCC is the only community college in northern Illinois that offers an associate degree in robotics. Students in MCC's Robotic System Engineering Associate in Applied Science degree program learn skills that will prepare them for manufacturing robotics and automation systems, and the automotive and military industries.

In addition to the AAS degree, MCC also offers a Robotic Systems Programmer Certificate program. Some typical jobs in the robotics field include: robotics technician space-based robotics technician, system engineer and robotic software engineer, system simulation designer, robotic weld engineer, surgical robotic technologist and artificial intelligence programmer.
