Explore Prairie Trail North by bike Aug. 1

Explore the treasures the northern stretch of the Prairie Trail has to offer by bicycle. Join McHenry County Conservation District's "Exploring the Prairie Trail North" from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 1, starting at Harts Road parking lot in Glacial Park Conservation Area, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood.

The first stop on the tour is the high-quality De Rose prairie, where the conservation district's plant ecologist will highlight the varied plants and their rich ecosystem.

Next, cyclists will then pass by the new Nippersink 206 Restoration Project before stopping in the town of Richmond for lunch. After lunch, cyclists are on their own to explore the antique and specialty shops in Richmond before heading back at your leisure.

Total biking distance is 10 miles on primarily a crushed gravel surface. Walking distance is one mile. Bring water and sunscreen in addition to your bicycle.

The program is for those 14 and older; fees are $20 for county residents and $25 for nonresidents. Registration and fee is required by Monday, July 27; there will be no refunds after this date. Lunch is included with the fee.

Register online at www.MCCDistrict.org; by mail and walk-in at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake; or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
