Check out history, animals at Lords Park

The Elgin Public Museum and Lords Park Zoo, 225 Grand Blvd., has a variety of events Saturday, July 25. For more information, call (847) 741-6655 or visit www.elginpublicmuseum.org.

• Join in "Adventures in the Zoo: Moths vs. Butterflies" from noon to 2 p.m. Come on down to Lords Park Zoo to find out the differences between these winged insects. Are they nocturnal or diurnal? Furry or sleek? Nets will be provided to catch-and-release any butterflies or moths fluttering around the Lords Park native gardens during this program. There will also be a craft provided. The program is sponsored by Friends of the Lords Park Zoo. No registration is required.

The zoo is also open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where many more species await. Be sure to visit the bison, elk, calves and llama, among other animals, during this free program.

• Visit the Elgin Public Museum to learn about the history of the Lords Park Zoo. From 7 to 8:30 a.m., they will discuss its beginnings, its mission and also some entertaining incidents.

Along with the history lesson, attendees will visit the pens of the elk and deer, and even help feed the bison. Bison feedings are held every last Saturday of the month, with a limit of 12 participants. For this day only, they are opening up the list to 15 participants.

Cost is $2 or $1 for children; museum members are admitted free. If you have any memories or stories about the zoo, come and share them, or submit a story to Francesca_epm@cityofelgin.org.

• Stop by the Elgin Public Museum for the opening of a photography exhibit by Tony Moline, a photographer from Dubuque, Iowa.

Moline fuses his passion for the art medium with his love of nature. This temporary exhibit focuses on birds found throughout the Midwest - the common and rare. Stop by the museum between 2 and 4 p.m. to browse through the exhibit and talk to the artist. Refreshments will be provided.

Moline's art is for sale at the museum. Most of the framed pieces on display are for sale, as well as unframed prints and cards, which can be found in the store. The exhibit will run through the end of August.
