Visit 13th century Spain with 'Cantigas!' performance in Grayslake

Embark on an exploration of Medieval Spain with EnsAmble Ad-Hoc's "Cantigas!" performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake.

The "Cantigas!" performance features 13th century Iberian secular and sacred songs presented in Galician-Portuguese. Explore Cantigas d'Amigo and Cantigas de Santa Maria, including songs by Martín Codax of a woman longing for her boyfriend, songs compiled under King Alfonso X for the Virgin Mary, and narrations of a miraculous river that listens to love laments.

EnsAmble Ad-Hoc was created in Bogotá, Colombia, by Francy Acosta (soprano) and José Luis Posada (lute and Baroque guitar) under the guidance of Early Music specialist Eduardo Vargas. Francy Acosta and José Luis Posada hold undergraduate degrees in music education and graduate degrees in early music and specialize in the performance of pre-classical repertoires, with special attention to Italian and Spanish music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

EnsAmble Ad-Hoc has performed in Bogotá and also in the United States and Mexico. Appearances include the Marinilla Religious Music Festival in Marinilla, Colombia; Bloomington Early Music Festival in Bloomington, Indiana; International Festival of Women Composers at Indiana University of Pennsylvania; Música Antigua en Bogotá; and the Noveno Encuentro de la Canción Infantil in Mexico.

The March 8 performance is part of the Early Music Series at the Byron Colby Barn featuring renowned musicians performing music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

Concert admission is $18 for adults and is available at the door only via cash or check. To inspire early appreciation for the arts, children younger than 16 are admitted free to all Early Music Series performances.

The Byron Colby Barn is at 1561 Jones Point Road in Grayslake, inside the Prairie Crossing conservation community. For more information about the Early Music Series, visit www.libertyprairie.org/earlymusic.
