Schaumburg Township District Library Celebrates Banned Books Month

Instead of observing the national Banned Books Week from Sept. 21-27, the Schaumburg Township District Library is celebrating throughout September.

Adults are invited to attend the Read a Latte book discussion from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Starbucks in the Streets of Woodfield, 601 N. Martingale Rd., Schaumburg. The group will read and discuss Alice Walker's The Color Purple, one of many popular banned books. Loan copies are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fiction Desk. Register by calling (847) 923-3347.

Teens can celebrate their right to read during a special event from 7-7:45 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22 in Teen Place. Participants will make "banned" crafts and snacks while discussing Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. A limited number of loan copies are available to borrow from the Teen Desk. Register by calling (847) 923-3240.

In addition to the programs, an exhibit of reader "mug shots" is displayed on the second floor, where patrons will see library staff posing with their favorite banned books. In the lobby, library visitors can vote on whether they would go to jail to support their favorite book.

The Schaumburg Township District Library supports the freedom to read and invites all ages to celebrate Banned Books Month at the library.
