Join Environmental Defenders to learn about climate science

On Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 17 and 18, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will present the documentary "Thin Ice: The Inside Story of Climate Science" at McHenry County College's Luecht Conference Center, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

An evening showing is planned for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. An afternoon screening is planned for 3 p.m. Sept. 18, with doors opening at 2:45 p.m.

Discussion will follow each of the screenings, which are free and open to the public; donations to help cover costs are accepted.

"Thin Ice" takes geologist Simon Lamb to the Arctic, Antarctic, Southern Ocean, New Zealand, Europe and the U.S. to explore what is really happening with global warming through filming of scientists at work.

Viewers will explore an intimate portrait of a community of global researchers seeking deeper understanding of the planet's changing climate. The documentary is a joint effort of the University of Oxford, Victoria University of Wellington, and DOX Productions.

For this work, Lamb received the 2014 Athelstan Spilhaus award for excellence in communicating science, presented by the American Geophysical Union, representing more than 62,000 members in 144 countries.

Additional recognition includes the 2013 selection of the Sheffield Documentary Fest and the 2013 Best Popular Science Film of the Baikal International Film Festival.

This event is sponsored by Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, the League of Women Voters, and Citizens Climate Lobby. It is hosted by MCC Sustainability Center and the Lou Marchi Total Recycling Institute.

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the environment.
