McHenry County collecting household goods for recycling

Think before you throw those household items in the trash. McHenry County Department of Health has partnered with several businesses and community organizations to collect and recycle residential electronics and a variety of other recyclable materials for residents.

Items can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the north parking lot of the McHenry County Administration Building at 667 Ware Road, Woodstock.

Holiday lights will not be accepted.

Accepted items include residential electronics - televisions, computers, VCRs, video game consoles, printers; a limit of 10 devices per participant; latex paint (recycling fees apply); fluorescent lamps and CFLs; documents for destruction; clean clothing (slightly stained or torn accepted), eyeglasses; Styrofoam, packing peanuts and Bubble Wrap; alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt only) and rechargeable batteries (11 pounds or less) and lead-acid batteries.

Recycling fees include fluorescent lamps and CFLs range from 50 cents to $2.50. and latex paint is $1.50 per quart, $2.50 per gallon and $8 per five gallon pail. Latex paint must be in sealed, leakproof containers. Smaller containers of latex paints should be combined into larger containers prior to drop off. No other types of paint or household hazardous waste will be accepted.
