Senator Kotowski and Rep. Moylan tour Avenues to Independence group home

In an effort to ensure that state funding will continue to support the homes and work programs of Avenues to Independence, a non-profit agency serving adults with developmental disabilities, Executive Director Robert Okazaki welcomed Senator Dan Kotowski (28th legislative district) and Rep. Martin J. Moylan (D) 55th District to tour one of Avenues' group homes in Des Plaines on April 21.

They were joined by Katherine Hamann, Family Transition Project Director for The ARC of Illinois, and Avenues' residential staff members. The Des Plaines home is staffed 24/7 and serves 6 of the more than 70 residents in Avenues' homes. Robert emphasized that, "Avenues' type of group homes are the 'wave of the future' and that with the right resources, are much better and cost considerably less than living in state institutions." Currently, Park Ridge based Avenues has a residential waiting list of more than 80 individuals from the northwest suburbs and northwest side of Chicago.
