Streamwood knocks off Cary-Grove
Streamwood ‘s Sukurat Giwa did the little things like diving for loose balls, boxing out on jump shots that don’t show up in the box score Saturday during the Sabres’ 42-37 win over Cary-Grove for the consolation championship of the Mundelein girls basketball Christmas tournament.
She pointed to the person who inspired her to become as good a player as she can and taking good shots and she points to a player in the WNBA.
“ My hero is (former Naperville Central standout) Candace Parker,” said Giwa, who finished with only 2 points, but also had 9 assists. “She taught me by diving for loose balls it keeps the momentum going and it keeps everything flowing.”
Meanwhile teammate Holly Foret led all scorers with 17 points for the Sabres.
“I think we moved the ball well and my shots were open. We we’re getting our post players the ball,” Foret said. “Our defense was good and we just wanted to win today.”
Kiana Jeremiah also added 9 points for the Sabres.
Cary-Grove and Streamwood played a defensive first quarter until Cary-Grove’s Alli Josfowicz made a 3-pointer as the Trojans led 9-8 in the first quarter.
Streamwood (6-8), which also beat Cary-Grove in a sectional semifinal last year, took the lead when Jeremiah and Hannah McGlone scored back-to-back layups to take a 34-30 midway in the fourth quarter.
Abby Jakubicek led the Trojans (11-6) with 10 points,
“I felt we played well defensively,” said Streamwood coach George Rosner, whose Sabres finished 3-1 in the tournament.
