Get tips on mastering Green Side Bunkers at Golf Center Des Plaines

Golf Center Des Plaines hosted the first of four "Tips From a Pro" Clinics on Tuesday, July 19. Golf instructor Eric Pick presented tips and techniques for mastering Green Side Bunkers. Pick taught how to attack a buried shot, how to hit the ball higher for a softer landing, and how to hit the ball lower for more roll. He recommended experimenting with clubs other than the sand wedge in a bunker, and to "practice, practice, practice."

Pick's advice for a Splash Shot included establishing a firm footing with a wide stance and squatting to lower his body's center of gravity. He created a steeper angle of attack by placing two thirds of his weight on his back leg. With the clubface open to the target, he aimed his body lines open to the target and splashed sand approximately 2-4 inches behind the ball.

Golfers had plenty of one-on-one time for questions about their specific clubs and game. A complete lesson wrap-up was also e-mailed to the participants after the clinic.

The clinics are free with the purchase of a $6 Short Game Pass, that allows unlimited play, with in and out privileges, all day. The next clinic will be on July 26 from noon to 12:30 p.m.; Pick will teach Chipping Techniques.

GolfTEC instructors will present Sand Shots on July 28, and Pitching and Chipping Tips on Aug. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. Golfers of all ages and skill level are invited.
