McHenry Historical Society to host quilt exhibit

Submitted by McHenry County Historical Society

The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum will be open for free for a special preview of “Glorious Quilts” exhibit, which is part of the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30.

More than 30 quilts from the museum’s collection, featuring Depression era quilts, red and white quilts, crazy quilts and a political quilt, will be on display for viewing.

“A quilt exhibit of this size has not been held at the museum since 1996,” said Grace Moline, exhibits curator. The exhibit will be up in July, August and September.

As part of the evening festivities there will be a raffling of a Depression Era reproduction material quilt called “Everything but the Kitchen Sink.” The quilt was pieced by Arlene Ham of Marengo and quilted by Sharrie Henning of Union for the McHenry County Historical Society in celebration of the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest.

The quilt was made in memory of Jo Oakley, an avid supporter of the society, serving as its president from 1988-1990.

Quilt raffle tickets are $10 and only 300 will be sold. The drawing will take place at 7 p.m. at the museum the night of the preview.
