Fire forces residents from Island Lake home

A fire that started in a detached shed near an Island Lake home spread to the roof and attic of the house, leaving it uninhabitable Sunday, according to fire officials.Initial crews at the scene of the fire found heavy smoke and flames spilling from the detached shed 15 feet from the home on the 200 block of Fern Drive, according to Wauconda Fire District.

The fire had already spread to the roof and attic of the house by the time crews arrived at approximately 4:33 p.m., according to fire officials.

By the time firefighters brought the blaze under control, the house was deemed uninhabitable and damages were estimated at $125,000.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control with the assistance of Barrington, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, McHenry, Nunda and Wonder Lake departments.

All the occupants of the home escaped safely, and no one was injured, according to the Wauconda Fire District.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday night.
