Sundling wants you to walk in teacher's memory

Walter R. Sundling Junior High is inviting the District 15 community to join it Friday, May 13, for When Pigs Fly: A Walk for Carolyn.

Carolyn Baider was an award-winning teacher who died of cancer in 2004. Her motto was she would give up on kids when pigs fly. In her honor, the staff at Walter R. Sundling Junior High started an annual walk to raise money for charity.

Over the past five years, this annual event has raised close to $60,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, needy kids in the District 15 community, and the Palatine Food Pantry. In this, its sixth year, the walk to honor Carolyn will help local families by raising money for Palatine Assisting Through Hope (PATH) and the Palatine Food Pantry.

The walk will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, May 13, at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, 1100 N. Smith Street. It will proceed south on Smith Street to Towne Square Community Park, 150 W. Palatine Road. There, lunch will be served, or participants can choose to bring their own sack lunches. Then the group will return to the school by heading north on Smith Street, arriving at around 1:30 p.m.

Anyone can participate in the walk, and donations will be accepted. Checks should be written to Walter R. Sundling Junior High with “Pig Walk” in the subject line, and they should be mailed or dropped off at the school. Individuals who want to help can also drop off canned or dry goods at the school in the “Fuel the Pig” boxes just inside the front entrance. Students can also contribute to the cause by purchasing “When Pigs Fly” logo T-shirts, which cost $10 and are available in a variety of colors.

To participate in the walk, R.S.V.P. to Rich Stocker at 847-963-3761 or stockerr@ccsd15.net or Paul Klimas at 847-963-3722 or klimasp@ccsd15.net.
