Many teen programs at Schaumburg Library

The Schaumburg Township District Library is offering area teens opportunities for self-improvement, fun and public input in the months ahead.

One of the biggest events will be the summertime “Battle of the Bands 2011” from 6 to 9 p.m. July 19 at Town Square, on the southwest corner of Roselle and Schaumburg roads.

Participating band members must be no older than 21 and available for setup at 5 p.m. on competition day. To audition, submit one song on MP3 to teenservices@stdl.org or submit a link to the band’s website.

Another competition of creativity is the poetry contest for students in grades 6 through 12. Participants may submit one or two of their poems for a chance to win a gift certificate to a local business. The poems can be in any form and must be submitted to teenservices@stdl.org or the Readers’ Advisory Desk by April 15.

The library also is seeking teens and young adults, ages 15 to 20, to serve as Student Advisory Trustees on the library board. Applicants must have a current Schaumburg Township library card and be available to attend a board meeting for one hour on April 18, May 16 or June 20. Applications for this position are available online at teen.schaumburglibrary.org.

Teens can volunteer in the community by participating in the “Year of 1500 Hours,” giving them a chance to take part in a variety of service projects. The goal is for participants to collectively total 1,500 hours of community service by the end of the year.

“Mind Benders Online Mystery Club” will let teens challenge and exercise their minds by solving puzzles and crime scenes online. Interested teens should register by e-mailing to teenservices@stdl.org.

“Romance Readers,” an online club for teens in grades 7 to 12, offers discussions about books on love, romance and friendship.
