Boys volleyball / Lake County roundup

Four players on Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team dominated the game offensively but the Cougars fell to Glenbrook South 25-22, 25-20 Wednesday night.

Garrett Kubacki had 5 kills, and Mikey Kelly, Martin Niemczewski and Thomas Robinson each added four.

But Cougars coach Chris Curry said the team will have to figure out how to serve inbounds quickly.

“Passing the serve to the setter is also high on (today's) to-do list,” he said.

Curry complimented Glenbrook South coach Tim Monahan on leading a good team and said that is why Vernon Hills scheduled the Titans to open the season.

“(We know) we'll have a good opponent to show you exactly what you need to work on,” he said.

Buffalo Grove d. Lake Zurich: The Bears lost 25-14, 25-12, despite Chris Carmody's 6 kills and Coulton Every's four.

The loss dropped the Bears record to 1-1. Jack Wegener had 9 assists.

Carmel d. Lake Forest: Mike Fitzgibbons led the Corsairs to a 16-25, 25-17, 25-20 win with 10 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks. Alex Dunlap contributed 28 assists. Damyan Kolomayets had 5 digs. Collon Long and Andrew Kampe added 4 and 2 digs, respectively.

“We struggled with serve receiving in Game 1 but made some nice adjustments for the come-from-behind victory,” Corsairs coach Kevin Nylen said.

Lakes d. Antioch: Patrick Keefe led the Sequoits in their season-opening 25-20, 25-23 loss with 8 kills and 3 blocks.

Antioch's Eric Phillips added 5 aces and 18 assists, and Ian Keller added 3 aces and 16 digs.
