Jacobs' Arceneaux signs with Morehead St.

Let's just say Morehead State didn't have to pull any teeth to lure Kara Arceneaux.

Arceneaux, Jacobs' senior third baseman, has known for some time she wants to attend the Kentucky school.

And on Monday she made it official.

Arceneaux signed her National Letter of Intent Monday to accept a scholarship offer from NCAA Division I Morehead State in Kentucky.

“I'm very excited,” said Arceneaux, whose sister Lauren, a former Daily Herald All-Area captain, plays softball at Loyola University. “It's been a long road. I've known for so long this is where I wanted to go. I made my official visit two weeks ago and it made me even more satisfied with my decision.”

It wasn't even softball that Arceneaux liked the most when she first saw the Morehead State campus.

“The school is beautiful,” Arceneaux said. “It's surrounded by a national forest, and the softball field is surrounded by trees. That was the first thing that grabbed me.”

The softball program also enticed Arceneaux.

“I really like their philosophy of the game,” she said. “The program is there to make you better. The greatest way to play the game is that it's fun and you work hard and you leave the program so much better. That's the way it is there.”

Arceneaux, a two-time Daily Herald All-Area selection and a two-time all-Fox Valley Conference player, led Jacobs to a 22-12 season and a berth in the sectional finals for the first time in program history. She hit .473, had 3 home runs, 21 RBI, 6 doubles, 9 triples, 24 stolen bases and struck out just 9 times in 110 at-bats. She has played the past several summers with the Midland Magic exposure team from Springfield.

At Morehead State, Arceneaux will join a program that has had success under fourth-year coach Holly Bruder. The Eagles were 27-24 overall last year and 14-9 and third place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

And, Arceneaux will get to study what she hopes to practice someday dentistry.

“Not a lot of schools have that program,” said Arceneaux, who has a 3.9 GPA and scored a 28 on her ACT. “That won me over, that they had my major, because school has to come first.”
