Scouting Jacobs at Johnsburg

Jacobs (1-0) at Johnsburg (0-1)

Game time: 7 p.m. today

Last year: Johnsburg 42, Jacobs 28

Last week: Jacobs 34, Joliet West 13; Grayslake Central 36, Johnsburg 20

Outlook: Jacobs got the Bill Mitz era off to a rousing start last week with an authoritative win at Joliet West. "The kids really played well," said Mitz, the Hall of Fame coach who is in his first year at Jacobs after a highly successful career at Stevenson. "They faced a little adversity and came back and played disciplined football. It was a great team victory." The Golden Eagles, who haven't been 2-0 since 1999, were led last week by junior Kyle Wright, who had 128 carries and 2 TDs in 14 carries. Junior QB Jason Judson was an effect 7-for-10 for 101 yards and a TD passing. Against Johnsburg, the Eagles face a team that went 8-4 and made the playoffs last year but struggled against Grayslake Central last week. Senior Dillon Kosel had 74 yards in 6 carries and a score for the Skyhawks and senior QB George Bielis threw for 163 yards and a TD and ran for another 69. "Their quarterback is a very good athlete," Mitz said. "He runs around and scrambles a lot. And (Kosel) is a very good football player." Jacobs controlled the clock for 39 minutes last week and Mitz says that's the key to his team winning this season. "We have to be solid offensively and control the clock," Mitz said, "and on defense we have to get a lot of trhree-and-outs."
