Former Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould steps down as St. Viator football coach

Former Chicago Bear kicker Robbie Gould resigned Wednesday as football coach at St. Viator after two seasons.

St. Viator finished 2-7 this season and missed the playoffs. In his two seasons as head coach for the Lions, his teams compiled a 3-15 record.

Gould told the administration at St. Viator that his decision to resign was made to spend more time with his family. Gould also said he would stay involved at the school to support his senior student athletes with their college recruiting, according to a school news release.

“We are grateful to Coach Gould for his leadership, dedication and commitment to our student-athletes,” said school president Ryan Aiello in the news release. “We appreciate his contributions to Saint Viator football, respect his decision to prioritize his family and wish him all the best.”

Gould’s team moved to the Catholic League Red Division, the lowest of the six CCL divisions, this season. His team had some success there, going 2-1 in division play with wins over Marian Catholic and a lopsided victory last week over winless De La Salle. But the Lions lost all six games outside the division.

Gould came onto the high school head coaching scene with lots of fanfare after being a volunteer coach at Fremd in 2023.

Gould, a former kicker with the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, was introduced as the new coach at Rolling Meadows for the 2024 season in a splashy press conference with dozens of media present.

Gould led the Mustangs to a 5-4 record in 2024 and back into the IHSA playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Soon after Rolling Meadows lost its playoff opener to St. Charles North 49-14, Gould resigned. He then was announced as the head coach at St. Viator.

St. Viator athletic director Nick Sobieszczyk said the search for a new coach is already underway.

“Our commitment to Saint Viator football extends beyond any one coach,” Sobieszczyk said. “We are investing in the future of this program, and our student-athletes will remain our top priority. We are focused on finding the right leader to guide the next chapter of Saint Viator football.”
