Girl Scouts open Camp ExplorersOct 7, 2014 2:17 PM - Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will open Camp Dean in Big Rock to the public for a Camp Explorers program on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This youth and family-friendly event will include cardboard boat races, archery, crate stacking, fishing, and a scavenger hunt.

Decision on ComEd lines through Kane Co. preserves comes down to moneyFeb 9, 2014 11:17 PM - Kane County Forest Preserve District commissioners are positioned to intervene on a plan that would place ComEd power lines and towers on the outskirts of two preserves. The district, though, could bend to desires of local farmers and allow lines to run through the preserves instead. But that will only happen if ComEd is willing to pay the district enough to buy one of the neighboring farms. The whole decision will come down to money.

Wrestling/Fox Valley roundupFeb 8, 2014 10:18 PM - Class 2A Hampshire regional: The host Whip-Purs finished fifth as a team with 81 points, but advanced numerous individuals to next weekend's Class 2A Lakes sectional in Lake Villa. Sophomore Kyle Szlenk took second at 106 pounds. Sophomore Wylie Allen also was second at 120. Junior Anton Krocko was second at 182. Freshman Jake Szlenk was third at 113, while senior Omar Perez was third at 126. Sophomore Jonathon Jimenez was third at 285.

Robert Kleczynski led Westminster with 13 points, while Brad Barker scored 12 points. "Great job defensively. This is a pretty good win for us," said Westminster Christian Coach Bruce Firchau. Burlington Central 58, Genoa-Kingston 49: The Rockets (16-6, 6-2) beat the Cogs during Big Northern East competition Friday. Sean Fitzgerald led all scorers with 19 points, including 5 3-pointers. Reed Hunnicutt finished with 11 points and James Raney scored 10 for the Rockets.

Girls basketball/Fox Valley roundupFeb 7, 2014 11:40 PM - St. Edward 49, Guerin 33: The Green Wave (15-8) defeated Suburban Christian opponent Guerin during crossover action Friday. Cece Rapp led all scorers with 17 points, while Madelyn Spagnola finished with 11 points and Katie Swanson added 8 points. "Defense was real good and we were pleased with the way we were able to pressure Guerin," said St. Edward Coach Michelle Dawson. Bartlett 49, Metea Valley 36: Bartlett beat Upstate Eight opponent Metea Valley during Valley Division competition. Ally Giampapa finished with 16 points for the Hawks. Kaitlin Brohan contributed 7 points, 5 steals, and 3 assists for Bartlett, while Lauren Janczak (8 points) and Elizabeth Arco (7) also played well.

ECC tabs Ceh as women's soccer coachFeb 7, 2014 9:22 PM - Elgin Community College has named a recent player and a current student to be the head coach of its women's soccer team. Rick Ceh, who played for the Spartans' men's team in 2013 and is currently studying for his Associate Degree in Applied Science at the school, will be the team's new head coach.
