Nearly 1 million students in Illinois are taking a new standardized test starting this week. Some suburban educators fear the new test is too difficult, too subjective, takes too long and moves students away from real learning. They also say the state adopted the test without allowing enough prep time.

Rondout Elementary School students watched Tuesday as a time capsule was buried on the last day of classes as part of the school's sesquicentennial celebration. Teachers and student watched the Rondout time capsule ceremony as the student historical department led the assembly to place items in the long, metal tube that would be used as the capsule celebrating the school's 150th anniversary.

Property taxes collected to run public schools range from $30,381 per student in Rondout Elementary District 72 to $2,815 per student in East Aurora Unit District 131, with 90 other suburban school districts falling somewhere between. For schools at the bottom end of the ranking, the taxing disparity means more reliance on state and federal resources and more basic programs.

Tiny Rondout district to begin sesquicentennial activites

Saturday's back-to-school picnic for Rondout Elementary School near Lake Forest will have a decidedly different feel, with the focus on the past rather than the future. "It's been a significant part of the community for a very, very long time," District 72 Superintendent Jenny Wojcik said of what has remained a single-school district since the Civil War era.
