U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary supports Fire Prevention Week

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Auxiliarists from Division 37 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will again participate and support the Westmont Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire which began on October 8, 1871, causing destruction to structures, displacing over 100,000 residents, and claiming the lives of approximately 300 people. This week is designed to educate everyone of safety precautions and measures they can take in every aspect of their lives.

This year's campaign “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention TM” focuses on raising awareness while cooking. Westmont Firefighters will be able to answer your safety questions and demonstrate the proper ways to extinguish kitchen fires.

Overall, fire prevention is about safety. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will embrace community relations in Westmont by sharing the USCG mission and boating safety message. Members will be present to answer your questions related to boating safety. Depending on the type of boat you own and operate, a fire extinguisher is a required piece of equipment. Auxiliarists will be able to assist you in determining what type of fire extinguisher is required for your boat.

Auxiliarists will also talk about other required safety equipment such as a whistle, horn, or red flag. It is highly recommended to make a departure checklist and leave it with someone in case of an emergency. We will stress the importance of life jackets, planning for emergencies and the unexpected. We want everyone to be a prepared and educated boater.

Division 37 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary looks forward to seeing you on Saturday October 14, 2023.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939. For more information, visit
