Reflect and celebrate Juneteenth with CLC

College of Lake County (CLC) invites everyone in the community to celebrate Juneteenth both with the college and at other local events in Lake County. CLC is hosting Knowledge + Power: Juneteenth 2023 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at the Grayslake Campus in room C173.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It was officially recognized as a state holiday in 2021 after previously being an observance since 2003.

"The celebration of Juneteenth is one of a kind," said CLC Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Jesse Morales. "It celebrates both the freedom of enslaved people and recognizes the inseparable history between African Americans and white supremacy in our country. It is a result of this shared history that our country exists as it does today. Juneteenth reminds us that we should always fight for justice, even in despair, because it will come."

Knowledge + Power: Juneteenth 2023 is hosted by CLC's Student Activities and Inclusion. The celebration will feature historical reflection, art and a special presentation by Dr. Gregory Gordon, CLC history instructor and co-chair of the Black/African American Employee Resource Group.

Other events going on in the community include:

Juneteenth Cookout, Friday, June 16, Zion

African Drum Circle, Friday, June 16, North Chicago

Juneteenth Expo, Saturday, June 17, North Chicago

Juneteenth Journey, Saturday, June 17, Waukegan

Juneteenth Youth Celebration, Monday, June 19, Waukegan

CLC will be closed Monday, June 19 for the holiday.
