NSUC Celebrates 70th Anniversary.

The famous Unitarian minister Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." These words were heeded by a small group of dedicated Unitarians who gathered in Highland Park to form the North Shore Unitarian Church. A Bond of Union was established that stated, "We associate ourselves together in a religious fellowship which affirms the dignity of people, the supreme worth of human personality, the acceptance of reason over authority, and is dedicated to individual freedom of belief."

In a long and storied history, a trail of caring and accomplishment has been forged and the Bond of Union confirmed over and over again in communities throughout the North Shore. NSUC impacts local communities in so many ways through supporting with time and treasure the Northern Illinois Food Bank and local food pantries, A Safe Place for at risk youth, PADS who provides aid to the homeless, the Deerfield Free Store for at-need refugees, Habitat for Humanity and in many more initiatives of social action driven by church and membership efforts.

The tradition of NSUC reflects an urge to join in community, to search for spiritual meaning, to grow through learning, meet the challenges of diversity, recognize significant milestones through meaningful ritual and confront bigotry and injustice by taking direct community action. We are a welcoming community for all seekers who wish to find spiritual sustenance beyond creedal demands regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or color of skin.

NSUC is also renowned for its excellent Religious Education for children and adults. Youngsters are introduced to a fun and imaginative age-specific curriculum that explores religions of the world, encourages spiritual growth and personal discovery and provides a path for each child to develop their own belief system. There is also a Youth Program for high school aged attendees. Adults are offered a rich array of stimulating and meaningful educational opportunities on an on-going basis.

Now located in Bannockburn, just off Interstate 294 on Route 22, today's church, with its fused glass windows and distinctive design, reflects the creativity and innovation that are hallmarks of this church community.

As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we observe past accomplishments with pride, recognizing the many individuals who have contributed to this legacy, and look forward with excitement to furthering our rich tradition as we move forward with hopes of a brighter future for the church and for our communities.
