Geneva Unitarian's Inclusion Book Club to host conversation on racism

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva's Inclusion Book Club invites members of the community to join them in reading and discussing "So You Want to Talk About Race" by Ijeoma Oluo.

The New York Times bestseller explores the need for a candid, open conversation about systemic racism in America in order to address it effectively.

Available from bookstores, libraries and online, the book is the club's featured title for February and March. It will be discussed at the club's Feb. 28 and March 28 meetings, held at 7 p.m. on Zoom. It offers a straightforward approach to guiding people through conversations about microaggression, police brutality, systemic racism vs. personal bias, and other critical issues.

The club seeks out books written by authors like Oluo who belong to groups which have been marginalized in today's society.

"It's so easy to spend most of our time with people who have similar life experiences, leaving us unaware of the challenges that so many people face on a daily basis," said book club leader Lisa Gades. "The Inclusion Book Club offers a way for all of us to become more aware and engaged on issues like race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, class, and access for people with disabilities. We're excited to invite everyone in the community to participate and discover what we can accomplish together."
