Libertyville DAR chapter brings Thanksgiving to Haven Houses

Even though the day was cold and flurries were in the air, members of the Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had their hearts warmed by providing two complete Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings, plus desserts and beverages, to both of the Lake County Haven Houses.

In addition to the complete turkey dinner, they were also able to provide each of the Haven Houses with all the fixings needed to enjoy leftover turkey sandwiches, including fresh baked bread, and to make turkey noodle soup.

The residents in each of the Haven Houses also received a $20 Walmart gift card.

The meals were the result of the generosity of the Ansel Brainerd Cook chapter members and Meijer food store.

The Lake County Haven is celebrating its 30th year. The shelters have provided a safe, warm home; nutritious food; and life-changing services to homeless women and children to help them achieve permanent and independent living.

The Lake County Haven operates two shelters - Hope House and Renewal House - and multiple units of transitional housing. A team of case managers work beside each of the residents to help them overcome any difficulties and help them get back on their feet. Every day, homeless women secure jobs, save money, and learn coping skills while at Lake County Haven.

The ABC chapter members also held a mini food drive for the Libertyville Township Food Pantry. ABC members brought nonperishable food items to their November chapter meeting. With the funds that were previously collected, they were also able to do a bit more shopping and dropped off more food for the Libertyville Township food pantry on their way to the Haven Houses.

Those in need of food who live in Libertyville Township are welcome to use the pantry service twice a month. Community residents, members of local churches, schools, companies and organizations generously donate food to the pantry.

The Ansel Brainerd Chapter, NSDAR, is celebrating its 45th year. The chapter was organized in September 1977 in Libertyville by 17 members. The chapter has now grown to include more than 175 members. In 2021, the ABC chapter members logged in 7,705 volunteer hours in the communities in which they work and live.
