Mini therapy horses provide joy, stress relief to Advocate Lutheran General team members

A pair of miniature therapy horses recently visited Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge to provide stress relief and bring joy to health care heroes.

Arriving in a van and sporting custom footwear, horses Grace and Unique from the SOUL Harbor Ranch Animal Therapy Program in Barrington stopped by the hospital to meet and brighten the day of team members.

"We are grateful for any opportunity to celebrate our health care workers, bring them comfort and put a smile on their faces," said Dia Nichols, president at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

"Getting a visit from SOUL Harbor Ranch is a fun way to lift the team's spirit and remind them that their hard work and selfless dedication don't go unnoticed."

Dozens of team members - some dressed in cowboy hats, boots and flannel - took a break from the workday to take photos and spend time with their special guests.

"Even just stepping away from the unit for five minutes to be with an animal makes you feel happy," Obstetrics Nurse Natalie Iovinelli said.

"Being able to come down here and pet the horses and hug them is a good feeling. It made my day."

The event was one of several activities planned at Advocate Lutheran General as part of Team Member Appreciation Week, a systemwide initiative to recognize and thank team members.

"Our nurses, doctors and team members impact the lives of so many. They work tirelessly to provide high-quality care to our patients and keep our communities safe and healthy," Nichols said.

"Amid a challenging time in the health care industry, it's important to show them how greatly they're appreciated."
