ECC's Latinx Heritage Month Kickoff Brunch to honor Jane Barbosa

Join Elgin Community College for the annual Latinx Heritage Month Kickoff Brunch honoring Jane Barbosa, a well-known member of the Latinx community in Elgin, former recruiter and minority affairs coordinator at Elgin Community College and founder of the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS).

The brunch from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 16, will feature a special presentation about the Latinx influence on the community and the legacy that the late Jane Barbosa leaves behind in our community and at ECC.

Tickets are $12 for students, $25 for general admission, or $250 for a sponsor table of eight. For ticket information, visit elgin.edu/lhm. All proceeds from this event will go towards the Jane Barbosa We Rise Scholarship fund to support undocumented, DACA, and mixed-status students to gain access to financial assistance and resources within the ECC community.

Latinx Heritage Month events , sponsored by the Office of Student Life, are free and open to all ECC students.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, ECC is hosting the first Latinas in Law Enforcement Scholarship Fundraising Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. The luncheon is raising funds for Latinas interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. The keynote speaker will be Iris Y. Martinez, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. There will also be special video remarks from civil rights icon Dolores Huerta. For ticket information, visit armentafoundation.org.

On Friday, Sept. 30, stop by for the second annual Fiesta en la Yarda from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Green Space at Building C. Enjoy a movie night on the lawn watching the movie "Encanto" and a special performance by Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoyotl. Feast on tacos y churros from two of local Latinx food trucks while kids can enjoy their free activity kits. This event is free and open to the community.

LHM: Fiesta en la Yarda - Encanto

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, author Pascuala Herrera will transport the audience to reflect on the experience of the Latinx community and on the experience of individuals with disabilities using her award-winning memoir, "Not Always a Valley of Tears." The presentation will combine storytelling, visual slides, honesty, and humor to cover a gamut of topics, ranging from immigration, Latinx struggles and successes, disability, advocacy to many more thought-provoking topics from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Spartan Auditorium. Attend for a chance to win a copy of Pascuala's award-winning book.

On Tuesday, Oct, 11, get connected with various campus departments and resources here at Elgin Community College with the Latinx Conexión from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Spartan Corner Lounge. Prominent Latinx leaders from ECC, transfer institutions, and the Elgin community at-large will be there to welcome you to the ECC community. This will be a great opportunity to network, learn about transfer options, and set yourself up with a path to success!
