Maine East and South students finish strong at state science fair

Four students from District 207 earned gold medals at the recent Illinois Junior Academy of Science Exposition.

Maine South junior Lola Bahrs earned a gold medal in the poster competition for her microbiology project.

Maine South senior Josh Brown earned a gold medal in the poster competition for his chemistry project.

Maine East senior Rebecca Hurwitz earned a gold medal in the poster competition for her environmental science project.

Maine South junior Olivia Killian earned a gold medal in the poster competition for her botany project.

Maine South junior Aisha Arshad took home a silver medal for her cellular and molecular biology project.

The mission of the Illinois Junior Academy of Science is to present science as a rational observation and systematic investigation of natural phenomena; to stress the importance of critical thinking and logical reasoning; and to encourage students to view science as an interdisciplinary study applicable to society and its interactions with the environment.

The state exposition was held at the Peoria Civic Center on April 22-23, with the paper session April 22 and the poster session on April 23.
