Libertyville DAR chapter donates quilt to historical society

At the April 2019 monthly meeting of the Ansel Brained Cook Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Jenny Barry, president of the Libertyville Historical Society, was the guest speaker.

Her presentation was about an 1889 signature quilt that is in the collection at the Ansel Brainerd Cook Home in Libertyville. This quilt was created as a fundraiser for the Union Church, and many Libertyville natives embroidered their signatures on it. It is now a genealogical record of the early residents of Libertyville.

After hearing Barry's presentation, the chapter was inspired to create a chapter signature quilt. It would be a replica of the 1889 quilt, with the signature of members and associate members and using the Ansel Brainerd Cook Home as the center square.

The chapter needed the guidance of an experienced quilter, and associate member and quilter Susan Snow agreed to be their mentor. The chapter held two quilting bees and 36 members helped to create the quilt. Over 235 names were embroidered on the squares, with the embroiderer choosing the design.

In August 2021, after two years in the making, the Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapters 2020 membership quilt was unveiled to the chapter at their annual dinner.

The quilt has been displayed at several DAR events in the state. It has been displayed at their monthly meetings; taken to the District IV Meeting in Lombard; and just recently displayed at the Illinois DAR State Conference in Bloomington.

The Libertyville Historical Society feels that the completed quilt will have historic merit and they will accept it into the collection at the Ansel Brainerd Cook Home.

The transfer took place at the Cook Library in Libertyville. After being on the road for a year, it was handed over to Barry and House Manager Mary Tompson, where they walked it over to the A.B. Cook Home.

The Libertyville Historical Society will be displaying their quilt collection that spans nearly 200 years. It ranges from an early 1800 chintz quilt to the newest acquisition, the 2020 DAR Ansel B. Cook Chapter signature quilt. The quilts will be on display on the second floor from 2-4 p.m. from June through August.

The Ansel Brainerd Chapter, NSDAR, is celebrating its 45th year. The chapter was organized in September 1977 in Libertyville by 17 members. The chapter has now grown to include more than 175 members. In 2021, the ABC chapter members logged 7,705 volunteer hours in the communities in which they work and live.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who are directly descended from a person involved in the United States' efforts toward independence. Any woman 18 years or older regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
