Waukegan church members raise over $6K for Ukraine

Members of Christ Episcopal Church in Waukegan raised more than $6,000 for Ukraine relief in only two weeks recently.

When MaryFran Troha and her husband, Gregory Thompson, approached Father Jean Beniste with an idea to match $1,000 in donations from the church members to help Ukraine, they had no idea it would be so successful.

Not only did parishioners give enough to match the $1,000, but the grand total was $6,625.

The funds will be distributed to the Ukraine National Bank War Fund, as will any future donations.

Christ Church, 410 Grand Ave., Waukegan, also has a robust Community Meal program at 2 p.m. each Sunday after its English and Spanish church services.

"We are all our community, whether here in Lake County or across the world," Father Beniste said. "We must have compassion for our brothers and sisters, no matter where they are."
