Fox Lake Police Department brings awareness to the dangers of distracted driving

The Fox Lake Police Department participated in Illinois' Distracted Driving Enforcement campaign, bringing awareness to the area about the dangers of distracted driving. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, 3,142 were killed in motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted driving in 2020. Distracted driving is any action that takes attention away from safe driving such as texting and eating.

Along with increasing awareness, the Fox Lake Police Department issued 63 citations in April including 27 hands-free citations, six uninsured motorists citations, 21 speeding citations, seven other traffic offense citations and one DUI arrest.

"Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed the Fox Lake Police Department to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior," said Police Chief Jimmy Lee. "This heightened awareness includes knowing that using a phone while drive in anything other than hands-free mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, but it is also illegal."

The Fox Lake Police Department joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this effort. The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
