League of Women Voters of Central Kane County to host April 28 program on Electoral College

The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County invites the community to a timely and informative virtual presentation on "Jan. 6 & the Electoral College: Why Abolishment is Critical to Preserving Our Democracy."

Learn why it's long past time to abolish the Electoral College, a relic from the 18th century. The program will be held via Zoom on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m.

Speakers will present information about the origins of the Electoral College, how it has evolved in unexpected ways, and the loopholes that allow legislatures to override the popular vote.

They will explain how the activities leading up to, and including, the Jan. 6 attack suggest the need for a national reckoning - and that it is time to replace the current electoral college system with an electoral process that counts all votes into one total result.

Speakers for the event will be: Alan Moghul, co-founder and executive director of The National Vote, and Joyce Williams, active League of Women Voters member and founding member of the LWV Deerfield Electoral Committee.

"The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County is pleased to host this important, nonpartisan presentation," said Jean Pierce, vice president. "The electoral college system was imperfect from the start. It was created in the 1700's as a last-minute political compromise. But the events of Jan. 6 reveal how vulnerable it makes our popular vote. We encourage community members to join the conversation, educate themselves on this important topic, and make a plan to vote in the next election!"
