Hoffman Estates mayor presents proclamation and key to the city to 101-year-old resident

The village of Hoffman Estates officially named January 21st as Marguerite Piekarz day. On Friday afternoon, Mayor William McLeod presented Marguerite Pierkarz with a proclamation and key to the city in honor of her 101st birthday.

Marguerite Piekarz, affectionately known as "Marg" or "Margie" celebrated her milestone birthday surrounded by friends, family, and Hoffman Estates Mayor in Alden-Poplar Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Margie grew up on the north side of Chicago. She was married to Freddy Piekarz a World War II veteran and enjoyed traveling and taking road trips.

Margie's family describes her as witty and funny. She enjoyed golfing and was part of a bowling league well into her 90s. If she wasn't golfing, bowling, or taking a drive, those close to Margie said you can find her in a casino - another one of her favorite places to go.

"Margie loves being active," said Diane Kviz, former caregiver.

She later moved to Hoffman Estates to be a resident of Alden-Poplar Creek.

"She came to Alden because it gave her more opportunities to remain active," said Kviz. "She's been here for about six years now."

Margie has seen a lot in her lifetime, from World War II to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Margie is tough cookie,"said Tom Burnitz, cousin.

Margie's friends, family, and Alden Poplar Creek staff said they all look forward to celebrating Margie's 102nd birthday next year.

"This was a special day, I'm always happy to honor residents in this way," said Mayor McLeod. "It's important to the individual, their families, and the community."
